“Our bones are fragile and falling and breaking. Someone is just one step away from not coming back to where you were comfortable living in,” said Foster Vance, who lives in an assisted living facility.

AI helping to keep assisted living residents safe

The technology, which people at Fellowship Square in Mesa refer to as Paul, is not found outside of Arizona currently.

To those who don’t know about it, ‘Paul’ looks like a smoke detector. The device is in every room of the building, and in just a few months, it has changed hundreds of lives.

For his part, Vance said ‘Paul’ gives him peace of mind.

“I recently lost my wife in February, so my balance of having somebody in the apartment disappeared,” said Vance. “I haven’t fallen in a year and a half, and I do not want to fall.

“A fall changes a person’s life forever,” said Tawnya Williams-Christensen, the assisted living director at Fellowship Square Mesa.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 14 million Americans 65 and older report falling yearly. Seniors who suffer a fall could face steep medical bills, rehabilitation, and maybe even a loss of independence.

“We spent a lot of time looking for fall detection, and suddenly it hit us. Why am I trying to find people who have fallen? Is there a way I can prevent the falls?” said Jon Scott Williams, the executive director of Fellowship Square Mesa.

He says he found his answer in a little device called Paul. It’s a radar-based device that uses artificial intelligence to analyze motion. Read now the whole article.

“The AI gets to know the resident’s habits, so when there’s a change in their walk, it alerts us,” said Liesen Clemons, general manager of Park Senior Villas.

A new artificial intelligence system is helping reduce falls at Park Senior Villas La Cañada without using cameras or microphones. The AI-driven system, called PAUL, learns residents’ movements and detects changes in their gait that may signal a fall risk.
